Random Act of Kindness

My father has never been a real generous man. It’s not his fault, he was just raised that way. He grew up in New Jersey as the youngest of 5 children and always received anything he asked for. But the other day I was at Starbucks with him and unbeknownst to the person in line behind us, he payed for their order. I stopped dead in my tracks, so incredibly in awe of this random act of kindness. It was something I never would have expected from him. I asked him why he did it and he said “Well darling, you never know what someone is going through…and maybe, just maybe you can brighten up their day.” He then went on the tell me about how he does this once, twice, or three times a week. His little explanation brought tears to my eyes. He never once mentioned this to myself, my sister, brother, or mom. He wasn’t in it for the honor but simply because it was on his heart. I learned that day that giving isn’t boastful, it isn’t righteous, nor self-contingent. Giving freely comes from the heart.
