My journey to Ethiopia to help an orphanage through photos
Being the father of two Ethiopian children, I wanted to give back to an orphanage in Ethiopia. I gave what I could—my passion for photography. I spent 16 months preparing and raising funds by selling photographs, etc. In May 2014 I traveled to Ebenezer Grace Children’s Home in Hawassa, Ethiopia. My goal was to help generate awareness for this amazing orphanage, by creating a coffee table book that they could sell, as well as get the word out about the work they do for orphans in Ethiopia. It was an AMAZING experience. I spent 11 days in this orphanage, playing with the kids, talking, and taking photographs! I took thousands of digital images, 1200 Polaroids, and 600 Instax prints, which were a huge hit! It was the first time some of these kids held their very own photograph in their hands. Some images I kept, others I gave away, but it was an life-changing experience. I saw love in action. I saw children whose lives had been changed, families in desperate times receiving help and hope. My coffee table book “Where Flowers Grow”, is done and I am hoping that through my Indiegogo project this will become a reality! Regardless of the outcome, Ebenezer Grace Children’s Home has more photos for their website and literature and I have 36 new friends whom I will never forget!
